Background

Property taxes are a crucial source of funding for local governments, helping to provide essential services we all rely on. In Davis County, these taxes play a key role in supporting the care of nearly 4,500 homeless and abandoned pets each year. To learn more about tax rates from the Davis County Assessor, click here. This year, Animal Care of Davis County is proposing a 57.02% increase in the county's portion of the property tax assessment. This is the first tax increase for Animal Care since 2017 and represents an additional $1,507,804 in revenue for Davis County. This increase is based on the findings of a 2021 operational and facility feasibility study and is designed to fund six new positions at the animal shelter.

The additional funding will cover the necessary vehicles, equipment, and operational costs for these new staff members, all with a focus on improving live outcome rates for pets. By enhancing our resources for medical and behavioral care, we aim to make a significant impact on the future of animal care in Davis County.

Truth in Taxation FAQs

Animal Care of Davis County is proposing a 57.02% increase in property taxes to fund critical improvements to the shelter’s operations. The increase will help fund six new staff positions, as well as provide vehicles, equipment, and resources needed to enhance medical and behavioral care for the nearly 4,500 animals that come into our care each year. This is the first tax increase for Animal Care since 2017 and is necessary to improve live outcome rates for pets in the county.

The additional $1,507,804 in tax revenue will be used to:

  • Hire six new staff members focused on animal care and welfare.

  • Purchase necessary vehicles and equipment for the expanded team.

  • Enhance medical and behavioral care for animals in our facility. These improvements are part of a larger plan to ensure better outcomes for the animals we serve.

The last property tax increase for Animal Care of Davis County was in 2017. Since then, the needs of the community and the number of animals requiring care have grown significantly, making this increase crucial for continued and improved service.
Truth in Taxation is a public hearing process that allows local governments to raise property tax revenues. It ensures that any proposed tax increase is presented to the public for input. During this process, residents have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed increase.

This could impact our ability to improve live outcomes and offer adequate medical and behavioral services for the pets in our care.

Additionally, you can contact any of the Davis County Commissioners at commission@co.davis.ut.us or Director Ashleigh Young directly with any questions or concerns at ayoung@co.davis.ut.us or 801-444-2220.
