Introduction to Birding by Ear

Some have said that experienced birders identify ten times as many birds with their ears as with their eyes, but no other aspect of birding is more difficult to master than voice identification.

Description New 2025

Some have said that experienced birders identify ten times as many birds with their ears as with their eyes, but no other aspect of birding is more difficult to master than voice identification. So where do you begin? Come to this introduction to birding by ear. First, we will meet for a workshop to discuss the basics of bird vocalizations, sound patterns, and how to visualize sounds. We will also discuss some strategies, tips, tricks, and resources to help you learn how to identify birds by sound. After the workshop, we will explore Farmington Creek Trail while listening for birds as we practice what we have learned. Participants may carpool to the trailhead a short distance from Western Sports Park.
